DVD: RELEASED! The Human Rights Concerts, 1986-1998 (6-disc box set)

This 6-DVD box is set for official release on November 5, and we’ll fulfill pre-orders immediately upon arrival. This exhaustive 6-DVD set contains digitally restored presentations of four different Human Rights Concert films organized by Nobel Peace Prize-winning Amnesty International between 1986 and 1998. The set has been released specifically to coincide with the 25th anniversary of their biggest concert effort, the “Human Rights Now!” Tour that featured headliners Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Peter Gabriel and Youssou N’Dour.Earlier this year, highlights from the concerts were released on a DVD titled Get Up! Stand Up!, but this 6-DVD set vastly expands upon that abbreviated sampler with the full films as they were originally broadcast. Three of the four films have never been available in any format since their one-time-only airing on TV; all have been digitally restored. For Springsteen fans, the main event here is the Human Rights Now! entry, the October 15, 1988 show from Buenos Aires. It was the final night of that tour, as well as the last E Street Band concert performance until their reunion in 1995. Highlights from this show were broadcast on HBO on December 10 of that year (the 40th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights); that’s what is presented here, digitally restored for DVD.

In that Buenos Aires ’88 program (Disc 3) we’ve got Bruce guesting with Sting on “Every Breath You Take,” then Bruce and the E Street Band doing “Born in the U.S.A.,” “I’m on Fire,” “The River” (another duet with Sting), “Raise Your Hand” (with Branford Marsalis and former E Streeter David Sancious from Sting’s band), “Twist and Shout/La Bamba,” “Chimes of Freedom,” and “Get Up, Stand Up.” The tour’s other headliners join in on the last few.

Springsteen also performed at the 1998 concert in Paris, previously released on DVD as The Paris Concert for Amnesty International: The Struggle Continues (now out of print). Presented here on Disc 5, Bruce performs solo versions of “No Surrender,” “Born in the U.S.A.,” and “Working on the Highway.” He also joins his former touring partners Peter Gabriel, Youssou N’Dour and Tracy Chapman for a rendition of “Get Up, Stand Up.”

The Bruce connections don’t end there: Little Steven appears on the first disc, a 1986 concert, performing “Redemption Song” with Bob Geldof, and “Los Desaparecidos” and “Native American” with the Disciples of Soul. Jackson Browne performs Steven’s “I Am a Patriot.”

Featuring performances by many other luminaries, including Jackson Browne, U2, and the Police, ÁRELEASED! features 120 songs totaling over 12 hours in all. It’s also loaded with bonus features on the fourth and sixth discs, including an exclusive, new 20-minute interview with Bruce, and a documentary about the concerts featuring new interviews with Bruce, Bono, Sting, Pete Townshend and others.
